The Bates Mill story goes all the way back to 1850 when Benjamin Bates started his textile mill in Lewiston, Maine. Bates was known for 150 years for producing high quality textile products. Much like Morgan Jones, when chenille bedspreads became the domestic item to have in the mid twentieth century, Bates already had the manufacturing capacity to capitalize on this trend. The Bates Mill Store, started in 1950, lives on to this day as part of Maine Heritage Weavers, Inc.
Bates was always very well known for the George and Martha hobnail style of bedspread which they still make to this day. Though Bates still makes a high quality chenille bedspread, the vintage ones are the best!
